Estate Planning - Preparing for the Future
Estate Planning - Preparing for the Future
Florida has a reputation for sunny skies and beautiful ocean views, and many folk decide to retire in our great state, as well as to buy vacation property or other investments here – regardless of whether or not they are U.S. citizens or Florida domiciles.
Over time, the Florida legislature has addressed this diversity in ownership with a series of laws that impact upon these Florida properties in a way that may not jibe with their owner's wishes on how these assets should be distributed in the event of the owner's passing. Combine this with federal laws -- especially ever-changing tax laws -- that impact Florida property ownership and the need for a strategic legal plan for one's estate becomes self-evident.
For example, the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act (EGTRRA)of 2001 was enacted into federal law several years ago. Nevertheless, there remains a great deal of confusion about the nature and extent of the tax relief afforded by this legislation and how it impacts a person's estate-planning decisions.
While the attorneys at the Law Offices of Adrian Philip Thomas, P.A. do not prepare estate planning documents, we are familiar with them and can refer you to a skilled attorney if you have estate-planning needs.
